I am delighted to welcome Suzette Smart to the studio with this Winter themed workshop 'Under a Winter Sky'. I was lucky to see Suzette's work up close recently, and it is absolutely beautiful. The myriad of motifs overlaid with thread, ephemera, and gorgeous fabric compositions are a feast for the eyes! Inspired by Suzette's textile piece Under A Winter Sky, this is the first of two stand-alone day workshops that can each be enjoyed on their own, or taken together for a wonderful creative weekend with Suzette. Hand embroidery will be used throughout both workshops. Create a charming winter inspired textile panel using a piece of vintage linen as your foundation fabric. Your design will feature a collaged house made from paper and fabric. Templates will be provided, but you are very welcome to create your own simple house design using them as a guide. One of the features of this piece is a stitched and collaged wreath, embellished with stars, leaves and perhaps a vintage yo-yo or you may make your own, you may like to bring a small charm from home to hang from your wreath, making your work even more personal. A piece of lace can be added in the background as a decorative panel. Once your collage is complete, a layer of wadding will be added to the back, ready for stitching and quilting. This project is suitable for all levels of stitcher. A simple running stitch and backstitch are all you need to complete the design but there is plenty of room for adding other stitches too. Suzette will also demonstrate one of her favourite embroidery stitches, the fishbone stitch, which is perfect for creating beautifully textured leaves. Your kit costs £10 and is payable on the day, and includes: A piece of vintage linen for your background. A darker fabric to add depth and contrast. A small selection of old and new fabrics for collage Wadding for backing Bondaweb House templates Embroidery needles & threads Please bring: Any favourite fabric scraps, lace you would like to include. A vintage yo-yo (if you have one). A small charm to personalise your wreath (optional). Any favourite tools or threads. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided, and you are welcome to bring a packed lunch to the studio. Please note that the studio is on the third floor of the mill, with stair access only. The toilets are on the same floor as the studio.
