Suzette Smart, Bird & Tree Ornaments

Service Description

I am delighted to welcome Suzette Smart to the studio with this beautiful workshop 'Birds and Tree Ornaments.' I was lucky to see Suzette's work up close recently, and it is absolutely beautiful. The myriad of motifs overlaid with thread, ephemera, and gorgeous fabric compositions are a feast for the eyes! Inspired by Suzette's textile piece Under A Winter Sky, this is the second of two stand alone one day workshops. Each workshop can be enjoyed on its own or combined for a wonderfully creative weekend with Suzette. Spend the day creating beautiful bird and tree ornaments using vintage fabrics, paper and hand stitching. You will begin by making either an owl or a dove using the provided templates and a piece of vintage linen. Suzette will demonstrate a selection of simple hand stitches, including running stitch, back stitch, seed stitch and fly stitch, showing you how these can add texture and character to your work. Once your bird is complete, it will be finished with a beautiful fabric backing and a brooch pin so it can be worn or attached to another textile piece. You will also create a decorative tree ornament using vintage linen as the foundation. Beginning with paper and fabric branches, Suzette will share ideas for adding stitched and fabric leaves, tiny lace details and other embellishments. Your kit includes a small metal pendant, which can become a special feature within your design by adding a tiny piece of stitching or fabric. Once finished, your tree will be backed with fabric, lightly padded and completed with a loop of butcher's twine, ready to hang. To complete your Under A Winter Sky story, you may even like to add a little fallen star to your ornaments as the finishing touch. Your kit costs £10 which is payable on the day, and includes: Templates for the owl, dove and trees Vintage linen for the front and backing of your designs A selection of fabric and paper scraps for collage Brooch pin and metal pendant Bondaweb Wadding Butcher's twine Embroidery threads and needle Please bring: Any favourite fabrics, vintage papers or small treasures you would like to include in your ornaments Any favourite tools or threads. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided, and you are welcome to bring a packed lunch to the studio. Please note that the studio is on the third floor of the mill, with stair access only. The toilets are on the same floor as the studio.
