Guest Tutor - Jill Rosalind, Rug Hooking

I am delighted to welcome Jill Rosalind of Curtains to Curtain to the studio! Having retired in 2020 after 20 years of exhibiting and teaching textiles, Jill was persuaded to come out of retirement last year to again share with others her love, passion and experience of rug making. She is now happily teaching again and delighted to be enjoying the revival of interest in making rugs, a heritage craft we don’t want to lose. Jill is also passionate about sustainability and is a founder member of Curtains to Couture, a group of likeminded women who are on a mission to “save the world, one curtain at a time”! Jill is the lovely lady behind the exhibition that is appearing in my studio at the same time as this workshop 'Small Beginnings, Great Expectations & The Lost Jackets'. Come along and listen to what Jill has to say about the project. In this one day class you will learn the technique of Rughooking to create your own piece with a simple design, from just hessian and waste fabric, which could become a small mat, picture, seat pad, bag, etc. Hessian for the base will be provided, and some materials, you are welcome to bring your own if you would like to use them in your project. Old Tshirts work particularly well for this and can found be found in all sorts of colours cheaply at charity shops. Making rag rugs is the ultimate sustainable textile craft, having originated centuries ago when worn out clothing and discarded textiles were used to create functional floor coverings for warmth and protection. It’s simple, needs minimal equipment and colourful fun results can be made quickly. . You probably won’t finish your project in a day, but full instructions will be given on how to complete your chosen outcome. There will be some materials available on the day, but please bring six old t shirts, in a variety of colours that you would like to work with. There will be some available, but please bring some with you. Also, you will need a rug hooker, for which I will send a link, they cost £7. Please also bring sharp scissors if you have them. If you have a quilting hoop, these do help, but aren't totally necessary. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided, and you are welcome to bring a packed lunch to the studio. Please note that the studio is on the third floor of the mill, with stair access only. The toilets are on the same floor as the studio.
