Ali Ferguson - Guest - Stitchers Pocket
Two Day Workshop, Sat 20th & Sun 21st June, 10am to 4pm
Service Description
I am delighted to announce that Ali Ferguson will be visiting the Little House of Victoria studio for a weekend of teaching for a two day workshop on Saturday the 20th and Sunday the 21st of June, from 10am to 4pm. Join Ali for two lovely days of nostalgia, sharing stories and relaxed hand-stitching inspired by memories of sewing, old haberdashery items and school sewing notes as you create a personal Stitcher’s Story Pocket. Ali will gently lead you through her making process of gathering and playing with materials and then using words, motifs and simple hand stitching to create work that is personal and has story at its heart. She’ll share her relaxed approach to creating a gorgeously scrappy pocket where fabrics are ripped and layered, printed words are highlighted, and personal words are hand stitched, and you’ll be shown how to add simple stitched motifs - all adding to your ‘sewing’ story. Time is given to every part of the process, from choosing the materials, to laying out your design, slowly & deliberately – this takes so much longer than you think! You’ll then start the lovely process of slow hand stitching. Don’t worry if you’re not an experienced stitcher, Ali will share her methods and work with you to create your own personal design. You’ll be shown how to assemble your pocket, you could choose to use the sewing machine or stitch it all by hand. Be aware that you may not finish your pocket during the workshop; however, you will leave with all the knowledge that you need to finish it at home. Ali’s approach is that ‘slow stitching’ should be exactly that, something that is added to, day by day, where the pleasure of creating is as significant as the desire to have a finished project. Your end result will be a beautiful scrappy, decorative story pocket that will look great hanging from a hook or displayed on the wall. The use of a sewing machine is not necessary, as the project will be completed by hand, but there will be one available if preferred. Materials are included for your project, but if there is anything in particular that you would like to use then please bring this along. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided, and you are welcome to bring a packed lunch to the studio. Please note that the studio is on the third floor of the mill, with stair access only. The toilets are on the same floor as the studio.
