Where Sashiko meets Boro ...... I have invented a new word to describe this kit, and have come up with the term ‘Sashiboro’. The rationale being that it isn’t quite Sashiko in its production methods, and it does bear some resemblance to the more rustic stitching of Boro, which has been used to mend clothes in Japan for hundreds of years.  Make a large 24cm needle case or journal cover with this kit, instructions are included for both.

The kit contains beautiful cotton threads from Japan and the iconic brand of Olympus, as well as Sashiko needles by the same brand.

I believe that my new method of pattern transfer opens up more possibilities in being able to work more freely than traditional Sashiko embroidery kits. This is especially so compared to the old methods of following specially printed Sashiko fabric with stitch lengths marked on the fabric, or the ancient prick and pounce method whereby pricking holes in the transfer paper and then dusting it with a powder to leave a mark, which is quite honestly tiresome.  This makes the kit perfect for beginners as only one stitch is involved in the design, running stitch.

By not having to follow individual stitch markings, it results in a much more free way of working, which is more akin to Boro. The way that I stitch is sometimes unconventional, and I don’t like being tied down with rules, I like to get straight down to the stitching. So, in these Sashiboro kits, I have included Vlieseline water soluble fleece to place over the embroidery pattern in this booklet and then the pattern is traced with a pen or marker, which is then affixed to the fabric to be sewn onto and later removed with cold water. It doesn’t matter if mistakes are made when tracing the design, as the paper will be washed away later.
